SunDensity, the developer of the Photonic Smart Coating (PSCâ¢) technology that increases solar electricity output and contains additional software in consumer electronics and architectural glass, today announced the closing of $2.5 million in initial funding led by Clean Energy Ventures, a venture capital firm funding early-stage climate-tech innovations.
“As ubiquitous as solar energy is now, the sector has seen incremental improvements within the past two decades. SunDensity’s breakthrough technology brings a significant step-function increase in solar panel efficiency, further accelerating our transition to clean, renewable energy. We’re pleased to invest in promising early-stage startups, such as SunDensity, that could be major enablers of their energy transition and also have the potential to stop more than 2.5 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions between now and 2050.”
Temple Fennell, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Clean Energy Ventures
SunDensity is the first company to concentrate on enhancing the photonics of solar modules. Its Photonic Smart Coating technologies is intended to work with almost any solar module and complement existing anti-reflective coating technologies for a wide range of materials and glass producers. The technologies can also reduce energy consumption and enhance the operation of consumer electronics displays and architectural glass in buildings.
SunDensity’s Photonic Smart Coating converts blue lighting that can’t be absorbed by solar panels to red light which will be readily converted into electricity. Applied under the glass from solar panels, the photonic coating has the capability to raise panel efficiency, enabling a 20 percent increase in energy output for even the most effective solar cells. SunDensity’s Photonic Smart Coating traps and transforms light via a special process, allowing manufacturers to apply this solar coating with widely available magnetron sputtering tools utilized throughout the architectural glass industry.
“With this support from Clean Energy Ventures, whose comprehension of the space and energy network will help us scale this technology quickly, SunDensity will develop into an accelerant to renewable energy adoption globally.”
